The Cheapest Way to Record in Toronto, Honestly

Searching for the cheapest studio in the city is a fair thing to do. Here is how to spend the least at 24K, and one honest note about where a cheap room costs you afterwards.

Book a Tuesday

The single biggest saving is the day of the week. Studio time is C$80 an hour; on a Tuesday it is C$55 an hour, for the same room, the same chain and the same engineer. Three hours on a Tuesday is C$165 instead of C$240. A six-hour block is C$330 instead of C$480.

One detail worth knowing before you book a late one: the calendar prices each hour by the day that hour falls on. A Tuesday session that starts at 11 PM and runs to 2 AM has one hour on Tuesday and two on Wednesday, and the two after midnight bill at the standard rate. If the whole point is the Tuesday price, start earlier. The studio opens at 9 AM.

Book only the hours you need

The rate is flat and there is no minimum beyond one hour, so the second cheapest thing you can do is not book time you will not use. A prepared artist with one song can be done in two hours. Book two.

If you are not sure, book the shorter block and ask at the desk whether the calendar has room after you. Running over is possible when the room is free; paying for hours you did not need is not refundable.

Arrive ready

Every minute of setup on the clock is a minute you paid for. Three things cost nothing and save the most:

• Send the beat ahead. Email it to info@24kstudios.ca as a WAV, or bring it on a drive. If it arrives before you do, the engineer has it loaded and lined up before you walk in.
• Know the song. You do not need it memorised, but reading and performing at the same time flattens a take, and a flat take gets sung again.
• Warm up before you arrive, not in the booth. Ten minutes in the car at low volume is plenty.

An artist who does all three walks in, sings a section for a level, and is tracking inside ten minutes. That is the difference between a two-hour song and a three-hour one.

Track several songs in one block

A block of studio time is a block. Six hours is C$480 whether you cut one song or three in it, so if you have three songs ready, one longer session is cheaper per song than three short ones spread over weeks, and you keep the same headphone mix and the same chain settings across all three.

Where a cheap room costs you later

There are rooms in Toronto that charge less per hour than 24K. Some of them are good. Some of them are a spare room with foam glued to the walls, and this is the part nobody puts on the rate card.

A booth that is not isolated at the wall puts the room on every take: a boxy resonance, the hum from the hallway, the bus outside. None of that is visible in the hourly price. It shows up at the mix, where the engineer spends time and EQ trying to take the room back out, and where a quiet take or a stacked double never quite sits right because the room is on both of them. You saved an amount per hour on the session and paid it back, with interest, on the mix.

The 24K booth was built the other way round. The isolation is structural, built into the wall, with the foam on top handling what is left. A take recorded here does not carry the room with it, which is why mixing it takes the time it should and not more.

What the cheapest complete song costs

Put it together. One song, prepared, tracked in two hours on a Tuesday, mixed at the smallest stem band and mastered:

• Studio time: C$110
• Mixing, up to 24 stems: C$150
• Mastering: C$100

That is a finished, release-ready song from first take to a file you can send to a distributor, with an engineer on all three stages. Half the studio time is paid online to hold the room, the rest at the studio; the mix and master are paid at checkout and come back within three days.

If the mix is not needed yet, stop after the session. You leave with a comped vocal on the beat, and the mix can come later, whether you tracked here or not.

Gift cards count

A 24K gift card is redeemable against studio time, mixing, mastering and anything else sold online, and there is no expiry. If someone is offering to help pay for your session, that is the cleanest way for them to do it.
