Audio forensics
When a recording matters and is not clean.
Noise reduction, enhancement and clarification of existing recordings, with an honest report on what can and cannot be recovered.
What the work is
Intelligibility, not miracles.
A phone recording from a pocket. A voicemail under traffic. An interview with a fridge in the room. The job is to make what was said intelligible: noise reduction, hum and rumble removal, level restoration where the source is buried, and clarification of the voice against everything around it.
Some of that is recoverable and some is not, and the second part is stated plainly. Before any work starts you get a short assessment of what the file contains, what can realistically be improved, and what cannot, so you are not paying for an outcome that was never possible.
How to send a file
Send the original, not a copy of a copy.
- Send the file exactly as it came off the device, in its original format. Every re-encode loses something that cannot be put back.
- Say what you need to be able to hear: a name, a number, a sentence. The work is aimed at that.
- Say how the recording was made if you know: the device, where it was, what was around it.
What comes back
The improved file, and a note on what was done.
The processed recording, the original untouched alongside it, and a plain description of what was applied. If a section could not be recovered, the note says so rather than leaving you to guess.
Time and money
Assessed first, quoted second.
Every file is different, so forensic work is assessed before it is quoted. Send the file through the project brief and you will have an honest assessment and a figure within one business day.
Questions people ask
Can you make a recording intelligible?
Often, and sometimes not. Every file is assessed first and you are told plainly what can and cannot be recovered before any work is quoted.
What should I send?
The original file exactly as it came off the device, in its original format, plus a note on what you need to be able to hear.
What do I get back?
The processed recording, the untouched original alongside it, and a plain description of what was applied and what could not be recovered.
How is forensic work priced?
Assessed per file, then quoted within one business day. There is no charge for the assessment.
Is the original kept private?
Yes. Files sent for forensic work are kept private, never published, and never used for anything but the job.
